I am a botanical artist, naturalist, and educator working with students ages 5–18 to deepen their connection to the natural world through art, science, and hands-on exploration. My work centers around native and introduced plants with dye potential, teaching students how plants can be transformed into natural pigments and textiles while exploring the ecology, chemistry, and cultural history behind natural dyes.
Through school programs and community workshops across the San Fernando Valley, I guide both youth and adults in botanical illustration, natural dye techniques, plant identification, and land-based learning practices that inspire creativity, curiosity, and environmental stewardship.
Karla Mejia BA
Sol Y Raíz is the creative art, expression, and experience of Karla Mejia a mother, mentor, and educator. Her work primarily focuses on how to deepen young children’s relationships with the earth through the more than human world. Currently Karla works for a forest school program on Tongva Land in the Santa Monica Mountains. She mentors students and adults on natural dyeing, weaving and ancestral practices. As both a student and mentor of these ancient ways it is her hope to share earth connections with her own community in the San Fernando Valley.
